Introduction to Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences

Xiyuan Hospital of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (hereinafter referred to as "Xiyuan Hospital") was established in 1955, and is located in Beijing, the capital of China. As the first large-scale traditional Chinese medicine hospital built by the central government after the founding of People's Republic of China, Xiyuan Hospital has a good domestic and international reputation for integrating medical treatment, scientific research, education and health care. In the early days of its establishment, with support and assistance of Chairman Mao Zedong and Premier Zhou Enlai then, more than 30 renowned veteran Chinese medicine experts from all over the country gathered here, laying a solid foundation for the construction and development of Xiyuan Hospital.

Xiyuan Hospital now has 36 clinical departments, including Internal Medicine Department, Surgery Department, Gynecology Department, Pediatrics Department, etc. Among which, Cardiovascular Disease Department, Hematology Department, Spleen and Stomach disease Department, Pulmonology Department, and Geriatrics Department are national key clinical specialties. These departments have reached the top level in China, and the hospital is also appointed as the national advanced stroke center and chest pain center. The hospital possesses 10 medical laboratories, including clinical examination room, imageological examination room, nuclear medicine laboratory, and pharmacy; 800 beds and 20 ward areas. The hospital has rich experience in the treatment of various frequently-occurring and refractory diseases with traditional Chinese medicine and integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine and achieved good curative effect.

Xiyuan Hospital now has over 1,700 employees, with top national TCM talents such as academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, masters of Chinese medicine, and national famous Chinese medicine practitioners. There’re 40 experts who are granted special state allowances. The hospital lays emphasis on the coordination between the medical treatment and scientific research. As the national regional medical center (export unit), the hospital presents fruitful outcomes in the fundamental and clinical research of TCM, rating as one of the most outstanding institute with remarkable achievements. Among them, "Research on Blood Stasis Syndrome and Activating Blood and Removing Stasis" won the first prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award in 2003, and the hospital comes to be the first institute to win this honor in the field of TCM. Xiyuan hospital is an important base for the talent cultivation of traditional Chinese medicine. It owns 70 doctoral supervisors and 175 master supervisors from CACMS, 22 studios of national veteran TCM expert, and 16 studios of Beijing TCM experts.

Since the establishment of the hospital, the hospital has been functioning as a window for international exchanges and an important base for the dissemination of TCM culture. In the 1960s, a group of veteran experts, represented by Yue Meizhong, had provided health care services to leaders of many friendly countries and obtained satisfactory curative effect. As one site of WHO Collaborating Centers for Traditional Medicine, Xiyuan hospital is committed to the development and construction of worldwide traditional medicine, presiding over the release of the "Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines for Chronic Gastritis" and "Traditional Chinese Medicine Clinical Practice Guidelines for Stable Angina Pectoris” in WHO Western Pacific Region, and issuing a number of industry standards. In response to the "Belt and Road" initiative, the hospital actively promotes cooperation with countries along the route in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology, medical care and culture. It has successively become the TCM training base sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce, a founding member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization's Friendship and Cooperation Committee, an international exchange and cooperation base of the Ministry of Science and Technology, an international cooperation base of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine for clinical research and training of traditional Chinese medicines, a telemedicine base of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, a base of the Beijing Municipal Government for international cooperation in traditional Chinese medicine, a demonstration base for tourism and culture of traditional Chinese medicine, and a service base for overseas development of traditional Chinese medicine. An international cooperation network with a number of renowned universities, hospitals and research institutes in the United States, Japan, Germany, Australia and other countries has been established by Xiyuan Hospital.
