In June 1954, an instruction was made by President Mao "to set up traditional Chinese medicine research institutions immediately, and to collect good traditional Chinese medicines for further research". Since January 1955, the Fifth Hospital directly under the management of the central government (formerly North China Hospital) was accepted by the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences as an affiliated hospital (now Xiyuan Hospital).
