Xiyuan Hospital Invites Internationally Renowned Expert for Lecture

On April 1, 2025, Professor Nina Fuller-Shavel, Chief Executive Officer of the UK National Centre for Integrated Oncology Medicine (NCIO), was invited to visit Xiyuan Hospital of the China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences for an academic exchange. The visit was attended by Li Qiuyan, Party Secretary of Xiyuan Hospital, Vice President Pang Bo, Director of the Hospital Administration Office Fu Jianhua, Academic Leader of the Oncology Department Yang Yufei, and other leaders and experts. The event was hosted by Xu Yun, Deputy Director of the Oncology Department.

Professor Nina Fuller-Shavel is the CEO of the UK NCIO and serves as the Global Ambassador for the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) in the UK and Co-Chair of the SIO Global Committee. With over a decade of experience in integrative healthcare, she founded and leads an innovative multidisciplinary clinic in the UK, focusing on women's health and integrative oncology. She is also highly acclaimed for her work in education and research in integrative oncology medicine.

Throughout her visit, Professor Fuller-Shavel toured the Cultural Corridor of Xiyuan Hospital, Acupuncture & Moxibustion Department, and Intelligent Pharmacy of Xiyuan Hospital to learn about the hospital's development and the construction of its specialized departments. Discussions were held on cooperation and exchanges in the field of oncology, as well as the international development of integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine in cancer treatment.

Professor Fuller-Shavel also visited the clinical wards of the Oncology Department in the Inpatient Area at Xiyuan Hospital, focusing on the department's experience in integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment for common tumors such as lung cancer and colorectal cancer. She paid particular attention to the actual efficacy of traditional Chinese medicine therapies, including wrist-ankle acupuncture, herbal plasters, herbal ointment massage, and five-element music therapy, in alleviating patient symptoms and improving their quality of life.

Deputy Director Xu Yun further introduced the overall planning and latest progress of the Oncology Department as a key specialty under the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This included the construction of an integrated traditional Chinese and Western medicine diagnosis and treatment system, the layout of research platforms, and the exploration of integrative medicine models. She highlighted the department's phased achievements in core research areas such as the full-disease management of colorectal cancer and interventions for cancer-related fatigue.

Both parties engaged in in-depth discussions on potential cooperation in clinical research, international multi-center collaboration, and exploration of population intervention mechanisms. They expressed intentions to expand cooperation in integrative oncology research, international project collaboration, and exchange visits for young physicians, laying a solid foundation for academic trust and cooperation.

This event was part of Xiyuan Hospital's series of international cooperation and exchange lectures, aimed at promoting high-level international exchanges in traditional Chinese medicine and cultivating international talents in this field. Moving forward, Xiyuan Hospital will continue to expand its international cooperation platforms and promote the deep integration of international cooperation with scientific research and medical services.
